Although the nine African American students who integrated Little Rock's Central High School were first met by tolerance from the white students, they soon experienced some physical and verbal abuse from pro-segregation students. Several of the Little Rock Nine moved, transferred to other schools, or graduated. During the 1958-1959 school year, Governor Faubus closed the public schools and the African American students took correspondence courses. By August 1959, Jefferson Thomas, seen here, was one of only two of the original Nine at Central High School. |
