Levi B. and Ester Smilie Vilas Residence
An exterior view of the Levi B. and Ester Smilie Vilas residence, located at 521 North Henry Street, at the intersection of Henry and Langdon Streets. Built in 1851 at at cost of $15,000, its location on Lake Mendota ridge was considered to be remote because of its distance north of the Capitol. Vilas died in 1878 and his wife continued to reside in the house until her death in 1892. From 1911 to 1927, the house served as the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity house for the University of Wisconsin. In 1965, the house was demolished to enable the construction of the current Evans Scholars House. |
