Cuautla Educational Adults Seminar
A village near Cuautla, Mexico, where the Highlander-sponsored, Inter-American Educational Adults seminar was held, invited participants to a committee meeting in the square. Myles Horton is to the right, speaking. Inscription on back reads, "...as long as the urgent economic reforms and social injustices are not solved in Turkey--in particular, the very serious unemployment which is said to amount to something like twenty percent of the whole working population--I think that as long as these problems are not solved, the attractiveness of communism as a political method is bound to increase in Turkey. -- Interpreter: (voice over) Even in metropolitan Turkey, in the large cities you'll find them, the public letter writer. They're the reminder that all these questions, of communism and reforms and unions, are placed for decision before a population largely illiterate. The educated voter, schooled enough to handle even his own correspondence, is a minority in Turkey. Public letter writes in street booths." Aimee Horton can be seen at the front table on the right. |
