Twin Pinion
Twin pinion marine red gear that was used by The Offshore Company for the Discoverer 534, a deep ocean drilling rig. Original Falk caption reads, "Propulsion gear [for a] deep drilling rig drive by four-2000 horsepower reversible motors (pinion shafts are double ended) through 55G20 or 55G52 couplings. Eaton 60VC1600 brake on LSS stops propeller before motors are reversed. Unit has all anti-friction bearings and is rated for ABS ece ceass 1A. Lube system includes a MR type gear drive[n] [by a] main lube oil pump, plus a motor drive auxiliary. When the ship is drilling in the North Sea and the oil temperature drops below 60 degrees Fahrenheit, the thermostat turns on the heater, the motor driven pump and also energizes a solenoid valve which directs the oil flow from the cooler to the heater."
