Combination Reducer
View of a combination reducer/pinion that is a component of a roughing mill for steel. This unit was purchased and used by the Eastern Carolina Steel Division. Original Falk caption reads, "This Falk drive replaces a special Swedish Morgardshammar reducer and pinion stand combination drive. It is the roughing mill drive in a steel plant and will accept billets 4 to 4 1/2 inches square. The roughing mill is the primary piece of equipment in this facility and its importance dictated a Falk drive. This particular mill is unusual in that the roll stand moves vertically for each of the 7 passes. The table and the drive are stationary. The 2.75 service factor is required to withstand the high loads imparted through the use of two flywheels to be installed on the high speed shaft. Design load: 4235 HP; Service load: 1540HP; Speed; 890 RPM input-121.75 RPM output; ratio: 7.310:1; Service factor; 2.75; Service: Heavy Duty; Duty: Intermittent." Male employee in photograph is Don Ferch. |
