MacArthur Returns

After his dismissal by President Truman, General Douglas MacArthur returned to the United States and was welcomed as a folk hero. The adulation heaped on the general reflected badly on the President. For many, Truman's action gave credence to the allegations made by Senator Joseph R. McCarthy and others about the presence of Communists and fellow travelers in the White House and the State Department. This cartoon by Richard Yardley appeared in the Baltimore Sun. |
