Joe McCarthy on the Campaign Trail

Joseph R. McCarthy campaigned hard for election to the Senate in 1946, traveling throughout the state. He paused in Manawa, however, for a visit with Mrs. Frank Osterloth, his former landlady, whom he thought of as his second mother. Other than personal attacks on Senator Robert M. La Follette, Jr., McCarthy raised no issues during the campaign, relying instead on his considerable energy and personal charm. |
