"Polly Want A Cracker?" Political Cartoon

Original political cartoon depicting Dwight Eisenhower as a docile Presidential candidate. Feeding him crackers are Senator Joseph R. McCarthy and Senator Robert Taft of Ohio, who had sought the 1952 Presidential nomination. The implication is that Ike will say anything they want in order to win the votes of their supporters. McCarthy is shown as swarthy and unshaven, a depiction used by most of the senator's critics. |
