Matthew Fontaine Maury, Scientist and Historian

Engraved portrait of Matthew Fontaine Maury (1806-1873) American astronomer, historian, oceanographer, meteorologist, cartographer, author, geologist, and educator. In 1855 he published "Physical Geography of the Sea," the first comprenhensive book on oceanography. Over his career, Maury made many contributions to charting winds and ocean currents, including pathways for ships at sea. Inscription at bottom reads, "Yours Truly, M.F. Maury, Lt. U.S.N. Engraved for the Annual of Scientific Discovery, 1855." |
