Full-length carte-de-visite of Robert Kennicott (1835-1866), American Naturalist. After 1853 he worked for Spencer Fullerton Baird at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., and was a prominent member of their Megatherium Club. In 1865, Kennicott worked for the the Western Union Telegraph Expedition, attempting to find a possible route for a telegraph from the United States to Russia. Shown here in costume, possibly from an expedition to northern Canada. Handwritten inscription at the bottom reads, "Bob Kennicott."
DESCRIPTION
Full-length carte-de-visite of Robert Kennicott (1835-1866), American Naturalist. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Photographer's credit on back reads, "S.M. Fassett, Artist, 122 & 124 Clark St., Chicago, Ill." From album of portrait photographs collected by Lapham depicting scientists and artists, ca. 1860-ca. 1875. Images include portraits of geologists, botanists, sculptors, and authors. One of two portraits of Woodworth in album (see Image ID: 47681). Album includes a note, which reads, "Dr. John S. Woodworth and Robert Kennicott of Chicago went to Russian Dunerica [?] for the Government. Collections made by them were burned in Academy of Science building in Chicago fire of 1871. Album includes an obituary notice of Kennicott's brother Dr. Jonathan A. Kennicott, which makes reference to the death of Robert. See Image ID: 47666 for Spencer Fullerton Baird.
