Vignetted carte-de-visite portrait of Professor Davenport Fisher (1832-1911), Milwaukee chemist. After earning his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Heidelberg University in 1855, and before moving to Milwaukee, Davenport served for two years as Lieutenant of the 5th Massachusetts Cavalry, and four more years as a professor at the United States Naval Academy. Once in Milwaukee, he continued to practice chemistry and married Charlotte Ilsley, with whom he had three sons and two daughters. A handwritten inscription at the bottom of the image reads, "Davenport Fisher, 1870, chemist." According to a statement in the margin of the album, Davenport was "killed by [an] electric car [in] Milwaukee, 1911."
