Edward Sylvester Morse, Zoologist and Orientalist

Carte-de-visite portrait of Edward S. Morse (1838-1925), American zoologist and orientalist. As a zoologist, he discovered that brachiopods are worms rather than mollusks. As an orientalist, he amassed a collection of over 5,000 Japanese pottery pieces, which now reside in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Handwritten text at the bottom of the image reads, "E.S. Morse, 1873." |
