Painting of "The Appeal of the Legionary to Caesar Augustus"

Painting, in the Wisconsin State Capitol, of "The Appeal of the Legionary to Caesar Augustus," one of four mural paintings by Albert Herter on the east wall of the Supreme Court. The painting illustrates Roman law and is taken from a little-known episode in the life of Caesar Augustus Octavius. The scene takes place in a Roman law basilica with Augustus on the left reclining on his royal litter. On marble benches in the background are Roman judges in white togas. On the right is the centurion Scutarius pleading his case. |
