Painting of "Wisconsin Surrounded by her Attributes"
Painting by Hugo Ballin, called "Wisconsin Surrounded by her Attributes," on the Governor's Conference Room Ceiling at the Wisconsin State Capitol. The painting is an allegory of Wisconsin, depicted as a woman, with "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness" written behind her head. She is surrounded by her attributes--beauty, strength, patriotism, labor, commerce, agriculture, and horticulture. The mottoes are "The Will of the People in the Law of the Land," "The Progress of a State is born in Temperance, Justice, and Prudence," and "Tempus Edax Rerum," (Time the devourer of all things). |
