Atwood / Buck-Neckerman House, at 210-214 Monona Avenue (now Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard), built by General David Atwood and his partner Royal Buck as a double house in the late 1840s and later lived in by George and Elizabeth Neckerman. Detail of the attic wall and roof beams. The beams are hand-hewn and laid up with handwrought square nails. The very thick walls were plastered on the inside and then wallpapered. For some reason this was unsatisfactory and furring strips were nailed over the papered wall. Wooden lathe and plaster followed with a final covering of wallpaper.
