Presented by Susan Williamson. From Stanley C. Hanks Collection Notes PH 6095: The Vilas House was erected by a joint stock company consisting of L.G. Farwell, L.B. Vilas, G.C. Fairchild, Simeon Mills, E.B. Dean and others. It was started in 1852 and opened for business under the name of 'Capital House'. The hotel was originally build with five stories as it is today, however, the iron balcony was removed a good many years ago. The building was 66 feet on Main Street and 86 feet on Monona Avenue, then called Wisconsin Avenue. The face constructed of yellow stone, and was one of the best known hotels in this part of the country. |
