Man with Racehorse
Man posing in a sulky, probably Eugene Greenlee, the Superintendent of Water Works, possibly pulled by a race horse. Note the solid tires. When pneumatic tires came into use on bicycles they were also used on sulkies. They improved racing and broke time records. Black River Falls had many race horse owners and people were enthusiastic. They were a principal feature at county fairs. In Black River Falls, John Peterson, Fanny Whitestone, and Mimmie Whitestone were owners. There was competition with a horse from Sparta called Poco Tempe, and with a man named Catura, who had several horses from Durand. |
