WHS Textiles Curator Leslie Ballais provides a ballpark date of about the 1890s, based on what little can be seen of the clothing of the men in the photo. In the 1870 Census for Springfield Twp, Jackson County WI, there's a John Allison, age 25, born in England, a farmer, apparently with his 22-year-old wife, born in Maine, and an 8-month-old daughter, born in Wisconsin. In the 1880, 1900 and 1910 Censuses, John Ellison is again in Springfield Twp with his family, but with his birthplace given as Scotland. In 1920, his widow is living with a son in Springfield Twp. |
