per an 8/2011 email from Catherine Mess, the church is a Presbyterian Church and was misidentified on the postcard. "Presbytery records indicate that a Presbyterian Church was organized in Phillips on March 26, 1882, served by traveling preachers who used any available meeting room including the courthouse, the school, and Fewell's Hall. In 1888, money was raised to purchase land and construct a church, officially known as the "People's Church" but still served by Presbyterian ministers. When the city burned in 1894, assistance was sought from the Board of Church Erection of the Presbyterian Church of the United States to construct a new facility. A stipulation of that assistance was that we formally become a "Presbyterian Church" which we did August 27, 1894. " |
