Woman's Building
Woman's Building, one of the oldest buildings in the city. It is believed to have been built in 1842 by John Folsom, an early settler and farmer on the heights above the village. It has served as a schoolhouse and a printing shop as well as a private home for Edward A. Pelton, John A. Newton and others. The original building was heated by three fireplaces, later bricked shut, but recently re-opened as part of the restoration work. The home originally had a large lawn that was sacrificed for the street. In 1923, the League of Women Voters purchased the building to use as a meeting house, and in 1960 they presented it to the State Historical Society of Wisconsin so that it could be preserved as a site. |
