J. Wesley Carhart
Engraved portrait of J. Wesley Carhart of Racine, Methodist minister, physician, and inventor of a steam-powered automobile in 1871. Although impractical, that vehicle won the first automobile race (from Green Bay to Madison) in 1878. This engraving depicts Carhart only a few years after that race. The engraving appears in his autobiography, "Four Years on Wheels, or Life as a Presiding Elder." |
