Interstate I-43

Fond du Lac Avenue (State Highway 145) exit from Interstate I-43 in Milwaukee. As originally conceived, the interstate system in Wisconsin was to consist only of two routes, I-90 and I-94, which would connect Wisconsin with Chicago and Minneapolis. Although Wisconsin wanted Green Bay to be part of the system, the federal government turned down the original request. During the 1960s the government planned a route in which the third interstate, I-43, followed the route of US 141 from Milwaukee to Green Bay. This section was completed in 1981. In 1990 the section from Beloit to Milwaukee was completed, making an interstate highway 191 miles long and entirely within Wisconsin. |
