Merrimac Ferry

Car ferry on the Wisconsin River at Merrimac. A ferry has operated at this site since the 1840's. In 1924 the privately owned ferry was replaced by this wooden ferry which was operated by Columbia and Sauk counties, hence the name Colsac I. In 1933 the state began operating the ferry, the only free ferry in Wisconsin and a tourist attraction in its own right. Caption reads: "Ferry on Wis. River near Lodi, Wis." |
