Mesas and Buttes Historical Marker
The Mesas and Buttes historical marker in Mill Bluff State Park. The marker reads: "Mesas and Buttes. These so-called mounds with flat tops and cliffed sides look like ruined castles and towers. The formation is properly called a mesa (Spanish for table) if large, and a butte if small. They occur because the capping material on top is hard enough to resist weathering. Eventually it wears away and they become conical hills. Since glaciers often destroyed mesas and buttes, the Wisconsin driftless area contains an unusually large number. This is Mill Bluff, probably named for a sawmill operated near here in the early days." |
