Text at bottom right reads: "© Allen Cheng Adams & Grace Company N.Y." and "Littig & Co. Bklyn NY". The center section of gray stone was built by Father Mazzuchelli in 1845 and 1856; the rest is later additions. First built as a religious and educational center comprising a college for men, it was later turned over to the Dominican Fathers. In 1867, it was taken over by the former Benton Female Academy; in 1902 it was opened under the name of St. Clara College and continued until 1922 when it was transferred to River Forest, Illinois, and renamed Rosary College. As of 1930, the school was a boarding academy for girls and the motherhouse and novitiate of the Sinsinawa Congregation of Dominican Sisters. |
