Athenaean Society Certificate

Membership certificate of the Athenaen Society of the University of Wisconsin presented to Charles Fairchild in 1857. The society was a student literary and debate organization formed in 1850. Along with other literary organizations of the period, the Athenaean Society formed the most vital part of student life at the University. The certificate is illustrated with John F. Rague's plan of the University which appeared in the September 6, 1851, issue of Fleanson's Pictorial. It shows North Hall, University Hall (Bascom), and South Hall, along with two dormitories that were never built. |
