Stephen D. Carpenter
Photographic calling card of Stephen Decatur Carpenter (ca. 1821-1906), an influential newspaperman who settled in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1851, where he became associated with several newspapers: with Horace A. Tenney he was co-publisher of the "Argus"; with Beriah Brown he was publisher of the "Argus" and "Democrat"; and from 1854 to 1864 he was associated with various individuals in the publication of the "Wisconsin Patriot". Later Carpenter established papers in Fond du Lac and Oshkosh before returning to Madison. Carpenter was also an inventor and his patents for two rotary pumps resulted in his nickname "Pump." |
