Philetus Sawyer
Philetus Sawyer (1816-1900), lumberman and politician from Oshkosh, Wisconsin. This salted-paper print depicts him in 1861 during his second term in the Wisconsin Assembly. Later Sawyer served as a three term congressman (1865-1875), and as a U.S. senator from 1881-1893. A conservative or "Stalwart" Republican, Sawyer was considered at one time one of the most important politicans in the state and nation. |
