Several members of the screenwriters and directors known as the "Hollywood Ten," together with members of their families at a demonstration before their imprisonment for failure to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee about their Communist Party memberships or associations. Included second from the left are Albert Maltz, Alvah Bessie (in the beret), and Dalton Trumbo (wearing eyeglasses). Herbert Biberman is third from the right and Ring Lardner, Jr., is standing under the Adrian Scott sign. Public concern that Communist sympathizers might be including propaganda in Hollywood films was part of the background to the anti-Communist hysteria created by Joseph R. McCarthy during the 1950s. |
