Rescuing the USS West Virginia

Sailors in a motor launch attempt a rescue of survivors from the water alongside the sunken battleship USS West Virginia during or shortly after the Japanese air raid on Pearl Harbor. Seen behind the USS West Virginia is the battleship USS Tennessee which took a few hits to its main guns, some burning to the hull through oil fires, and some deck burning from debris that came from the USS Arizona. The USS West Virginia was hit by nine torpedoes and began taking on water. The crew used counter-flooding to stabilize the ship, but eventually the USS West Virginia sank. |
