Funeral of Robert M. La Follette Jr.

Robert M. La Follette Jr., funeral at Grace Episcopal Church. The former senator, who committed suicide, was thought to have been depressed. Some thought his death was prompted by fear that he might be called to testify about alleged Communists on the Civil Liberties Committee he had headed during the 1930s. Others speculated that the career of his successor in the Senate, Joseph R. McCarthy, might have hastened his death. |
