Forest Hill Cemetery
Confederate Rest at the Forest Hill Cemetery, showing graves of Confederate soldiers who died as prisoners of war in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1862. The grave in the foreground is of Mrs. Alice Whiting Waterman, a southerner by birth, who moved to Madison in 1868. Widowed and without relatives in Wisconsin, Mrs. Waterman became interested in the neglected graves, and she spent the remaining twenty-five years beautifying Confederate Rest, before she also died and was buried among them as she requested. Today the area is cared for by the city of Madison. |
