Dr. Anna Howard Shaw (1847-1919) turning the crank of her car. Dr. Shaw was an ordained Methodist minister, physician, temperance lecturer, woman's suffrage orator and peace advocate. She was member of a Big Rapids area pioneer family and friend and colleague of Susan B. Anthony. She completed her early education at Big Rapids High School and Albion College. She was the first woman to receive the highest civilian Presidential citation, the Distinguished Service Medal, for her international efforts on behalf of world peace. She is recognized in the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame.
