The sandstone building in which Rennebohm's and the Hub were located was originally constructed by the Democrat Co. in 1871. Sometime before this picture was taken, the facade above the German-themed restaurant, which had previously matched that over the Rennebohm store, was radically altered. In 1946, one of the worst fires in Madison history destroyed most of the stores in this picture. Baron's escaped damage because of a three-foot fire wall. Newspaper accounts record that the Rennebohm's manager saved all of the prescription records. |
