The image presents a curious pairing. Robert Fleming was political reporter for the Milwaukee Journal, which McCarthy once referred to as the "Milwaukee Daily Worker" because of the criticism he received from the paper. Fleming was one of a number of Wisconsin journalists who investigated and exposed the senator's Wisconsin background. Republican Walter J. Kohler, Jr. became Wisconsin governor in 1950. He is said to have disliked McCarthy and his methods but chose not to run against the senator in 1952. Instead Kohler served three terms as governor and in 1957 ran unsuccessfully for McCarthy's vacant Senate seat. |
