Philetus Sawyer

Philetus Sawyer, congressman, U.S. Senator, and Oshkosh lumber baron (1816-1900). During the 1880s and 1890s Sawyer was one of a small group of conservative, Stalwart Republicans that dominated Wisconsin politics. In 1891 Robert M. La Follette, Sr., broke with Sawyer over an alleged bribery attempt and the remainder of the decade witnessed the La Follette Progressives' ongoing attempts to oust the Stalwarts from power. La Follette's successful gubernatorial campaign in 1900 marked the culmination of this effort. |
