Abby Louise Smith Tallmadge

Abigail Louise Smith Tallmadge (1804-1857) was the daughter of a New York judge and the mother of nine children. This portrait of Mrs. Tallmadge was painted in New York State in 1833 by Samuel Lovett Waldo (1783-1861) and William Jewett (1792-1874), together with a portrait they painted of her husband, U.S. Senator (D-NY; later Wisconsin Territorial Governor) Nathaniel Tallmadge (1969.292.1). Waldo and Jewett charged the Tallmadges $160 for both portraits, plus $32 for their frames (see accession file for copies of original correspondence from the artists to Tallmadge). The portraits were presented to the State Historical Society of Wisconsin in 1969 by the Tallmadges' great-grandson, Robert P. Boardman. |
