Eben and Roseline Peck Cabin

Back of painting reads: "Madison in June 1837 after photo taken by E.E. Bailey" and "Peck's cabin by Dengel." The Eben Peck cabin was the first house built in Madison, Wisconsin. Based upon later correspondence with a relative of artist, Isabella Dengel (1878-1904) painted this painting using a photo or engraving of E.E. Bailey's painting. Isabella painted this painting for George Burrows in exchange for another painting he had given her. The Dengel farm was on the site of the present Burrows Park. The State Historical Society of Wisconsin received the painting after the 1919 death of Burrows' son, George T. Burrows, according to terms set forth in the elder Burrows' will. |
