The Opening of the Railroad from Grandhaven to Grand Rapids
At the opening of the railway between Grandhaven and Grand Rapids, Michigan on July 26, 1857, the locomotive Grand Rapids was manned by the railroad workers from the main plant in Hamilton. At the head was Mr. Muir from Detroit. Here the men perch and wave from the front of the engine. Whenever a train entered a station they were met with cheers and cannons. Hölzlhuber had already delivered sketches of the countryside along the new route to General Director Julius Movius, as well as to Leslie's and Harper's. Taken from Hölzlhuber's description of the scene, translated by Vera Kroner. |
