A View of Harper's Ferry
Business with Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper took Hölzlhuber to New York, and from there he also visited Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington. He traveled up the Potomac River to Harper's Ferry, the location of John Brown's later raid in 1859. The landscape there reminded him of Saxon Switzerland. Featured here is a view from above the town, facing the Potomac, with a church in the foreground and mountains on the horizon. A steam train advances along the riverside track. Taken from Hölzlhuber's description of the scene, translated by Vera Kroner. |
