One Night on Mendota Lake, Wisconsin

Hölzlhuber's first extensive excursion in Wisconsin was a walking tour from Madison to Prairie du Sac along the Wisconsin River. He lost his way along Lake Mendota, and "for the first time had to sleep outside." He constructed a make-shift shelter under a beech tree, and recalled a travelogue he'd read by L. Koch. On American lakes "one could hear the song of the lark or the knocking of a quail and the sweet tone of a nightingale, and I can only agree with Koch...I also heard the terrible calls of the bullfrog....then I fell asleep." Taken from Hölzlhuber's description of the scene, translated by Vera Kroner. |
