Ludemann's Farm near Milwaukee

Ludemann's Farm near Milwaukee | Painting | Wisconsin Historical Society
The Ludemann's [also spelled Lueddemann] farm had been cultivated since the early 1850s by Mr. Ludemann, "a very pleasant Saxon with his very pleasant wife." It was also a popular restaurant, known as Ludemann's on the Lake, that served good beer, wine, milk, bacon, cheese, butter, and coffee. Large numbers of people came from Milwaukee on Sunday afternoons by wagon, boat, or a two-hour walk, to picnic and occasionally listen to concerts. Shown here are the farm buildings, ships on Lake Michigan, and what appears to be the original North Point Lighthouse, built in 1855, on the bluffs north of the property.

Taken from Hölzlhuber's description of the scene, translated by Vera Kroner.
