The Salesianum near Milwaukee

A Catholic seminary since 1854, the Salesianum was built by Dr. Salzmann, a Catholic missionary from Munzbach in upper Austria. A two-hour walk from the city of Milwaukee, its local soil contained excellent materials for making porcelain tiles. Kilns were erected and the manufactured tiles were shipped by way of Lake Michigan to Milwaukee where they were used for many of the city's buildings. Nine of these kilns are shown in the lower right. A large cross stands in the middle ground. Several buildings on the left, including a small church, stand on the opposite bank of a stream with a bridge. Taken from Hölzlhuber's description of the scene, translated by Vera Kroner. |
