The Steamboat Lady Harris

One of the many steamers that frequented the Mississippi River, shown here on choppy water in front of tree-covered bluffs. The ship has two smokestacks, four decks, and flies two American flags. Hölzlhuber reported that steamers were "swimming castles," furnished magnificently and offering "all kinds of comfort" to the passengers. Lady Harris was "really a huge boat" (the paddle wheels measuring 38 feet in diameter), and at that time one of the fastest on the upper Mississippi. This sketch was taken at present-day Lake Pepin, where the Mississippi is three miles wide. Hölzlhuber boarded at St. Croix and disembarked at Winona, taking another ship to Dubuque. Taken from Hölzlhuber's description of the scene, translated by Vera Kroner. |
