This image is part of the Gerhard A. Gesell collection. Gerhard Gesell (1845-1906) began his photographic career in Reads Landing, Minnesota. He moved across the Mississippi River, to Alma, Wisconsin, in 1876 where he remained until his death. He earned a reputation for his portraits of townspeople and members of the German immigrant community. His photos include images of daily life in this community along the Mississippi River.
