Photograph
Cornelius Wheeler
Ferrotype/tintype portrait of Corporal Cornelius Wheeler of Company I of the 2nd Wisconsin Regiment. Standing, facing forward with arms folded, in full uniform. This photograph was probably taken in the field shortly after the regiment received their distinctive Iron Brigade uniforms. On the first day at Gettysburg the Iron Brigade sustained its reputation as a fighting force, despite severe losses. The 2nd Wisconsin experienced a 77% casualty rate, and Wheeler, then a sergeant, ended the day as the most senior man in his company. |
