Fordson Tractor with Plow Equipped for "Driverless Operation"
Farmer and mechanic F.L. Zybach, 32, standing beside his invention -- a Fordson tractor with a front-mounted plow equipped for "driverless operation." Original caption reads: "A farmer for some time, he tired of sitting behind a plow and hit upon a scheme of a plow that would turn over a field without the touch of a hand. All that he does is guide the plow in the first furrow, on the outside of the field, rounding off the corners. From then on the machine runs itself until the entire field is plowed. A four foot piece of iron pipe, one end fastened to the front axle, the other end fastened to a curved piece of sheet iron that hugs the furrow wall. The instant the machine tries to stray out of its path, the curved piece of iron releases a spring that shuts off the ignition. The spring can be seen on front axle. All that Zybach does is to sit in the shade of a tree and watch his invention plow his fields." |
