Storefront Portrait

Two well-dressed women in aprons and two smartly dressed men pose in front of the open entrance of J. Buntman's fruit and confectionery store at 1005 North Eighth Street. Jars of penny candy, tins of spices, American flags and boxes of fruit are some of the items displayed in the window. Beneath a fold-down table, signs on a large wooden box advertise Old Soldier brand tobacco. On the right, billboard posters advertise coverage of all the latest news dispatches from home and abroad regarding the theater of war by the Tagliche Sheboygan Zeitung, the city's daily German newspaper. "Theater of war" most likely refers to the Spanish-American War. |
