Young "Girl" in Curls
A young boy sits while getting his hair curled with an electric curling iron. According to an article that appeared in the January 9, 1939 Life magazine, he was a member of Boy Scout Troop 1 of Grace Episcopal Church in Sheboygan, which performed two shows of a "burlesque" version of "Romeo and Juliet." All roles were played by boys aged 9-17. The script and songs were written by Father William Elwell, Episcopal minister, who also directed and accompanied on piano. Many liberties were taken with the plot (such as having a happy ending, with Romeo rescuing Juliet from the tomb), and the embellishments of modern slang, songs and dances provided the audience with endless laughs. |
