Wisconsin Central Train

Group of men posing in front of the Wisconsin Central Railroad train at a depot. Railroad historian Roy L. Martin, from whose collection this image comes, notes that locomotive No #6 (known as the Portage) was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1872. No 6 was one of the Baldwin engines of the Wisconsin Central. This locomotive was referred to as a "cold water Baldwin" because of a mechanical water pump which forced cold water into the boiler. Here the engine retains the crosshead boiler feed pumps. The engine also had brass bands around the steam chests and boiler jackets, broad bands around the front and back domes, and gold striping on the center dome and tender. The mudguards over the driving wheels were referred to as "pants." Station agent Alex Mohr is near the door of the depot. He and his family lived above the depot, as was then the custom. The man in the linen duster is thought to be Gavin Campbell, superintendent of the road. The conductor is Tom Clark, the engineer is George Holmes. |
